The first representation of the Reconquest has been a great success. The Residents Association of the Old Quarters of Vigo inaugurated the Bicentenary activities with a recreation of the event from Príncipe Street to the Plaza de la Constitución, with the participation of thousands of Vigo citizens and which ended with a concert given by a band from Brittany.

Vigo surrendered on 31st January, 1809, to the two squadrons of light cavalry under the command of Major Nicolás. These comprised the advance party of Napoleon’s army that would occupy the city for 56 days.
Two hundred years later, the residents from the Old Quarters commemorated the historic anniversary with a recreation of the event, which was markedly festive, and harmony was restored at the end through a concert by the band from Brittany “Skeud”.
Activities commenced with a course on dances from Brittany held at the Plaza de la Constitución and the climax of the day was the recreation event with a parade of “French” troops that started at Príncipe Street, in front of the Marco Museum.
In the headquarters at the old council hall, Governor Villavicencio tried to calm down the residents who could not wait to engage the invaders in battle. Finally, after a heated debate, Vigo surrendered to the imperial troops and the city passed into French hands.
The public also participated in the recreation cheering Viva! to Vigo and protesting against the French. The festive celebration finally ended with music and dancing.
This representation started the Bicentenary activities of the Reconquest, however, the month of March will be the most important one since there will be new representations, a Congress on the Reconquest and an exhibition at Castrelos, amongst other activities.
Everything will end with the great and popular feast of the Reconquest which is organized every year by the Resident’s Association of the Old Quarters of Vigo.
