Francisco Javier Vázquez Varela
The mayor of Vigo
Just prior to the entry of the French in the town of Vigo, Francisco Javier Vázquez Varela was appointed as Mayor and Judge within a operation that was devised to dismiss the earlier corporation, which was suspected of being pro-French. He maintained his post during the French occupation under Governor Chalot, and subjected him to a debilitating war through complaints of all type whilst simultaneously organising resistance and sending aid to countrymen who were holding the siege. He was awarded the honorific medal after the reconquest and is the author of one of the most complete reports on this historic event.
