The abbot of Couto
In February, 1809, he established himself as the principal leader of the uprising against the French and confronted the very Marshall Soult at Mourentán bridge . He managed to attract support amongst the local residents and formed a small army with which he organised the siege of the city of Tui. He was able to bring together more than eight thousand men around the Episcopal city although this siege was finally unsuccessful. His troops later participated in the battle of Ponte Sampaio which resulted in a great Galician victory. The Supreme Committee awarded him with the Cross of King Charles III and made him canon in Santiago. He died on the 31st of May, 1817.
